Client FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. Select Law is a completely free service for clients. No hidden fees, no hidden charges. Register now to find a lawyer.

Is Select Law independent?

Yes. No employee or board member of Select Law is employed by a law firm or sole practitioner in Australia. Further, we don’t recommend that clients choose one law firm over another. We provide clients with relevant information to enable the client to make an informed choice.

Do you guarantee that lawyers will bid to win my work?

No, although on average most clients receive at least 3 bids. If you have not received any bids within the tendering period, contact us to discuss your case.

Does Select Law provide legal advice?

No. Select Law is an information service only. We are not a law firm and our employees are not practicing solicitors.

Are my details kept confidential?

Once you have submitted your case, we invite suitable law firms to bid for your case. Those firms are given your name, type of matter and the names of any of other parties involved in your case. That information allows the law firms to conduct a conflict search. If the firm does not have a conflict with your case, and could take your matter on, then they are given the rest of your case details. Importantly, however, only the firm you choose is given your contact details.

What areas of law are covered by Select Law?

We can help with all kinds of legal problems. If you can't find the legal area of law you're looking for, simply select the 'Other' option and then describe your case in your own words. (We do not cover "personal injury" matters in NSW or the Northern Territory.)

Can I change the details of a case I haven’t submitted yet?

Yes. Simply log into your Select Law account and go to "all cases". Select the case you want to edit and follow the prompts.

Can I edit my case after I have submitted it?

If you contact Select Law immediately after submitting your case, we can edit the details for you. However, we cannot edit the details of your case once lawyers have begun bidding for your legal case.

Who contacts who?

Your name and contact details will be provided to the lawyer you select as the winner. That law firm will contact you within one day of your selection to arrange a meeting time.

Do I have to wait until tendering closes before choosing a law firm?

No. You are free to choose your preferred lawyer at any time, and do not have to wait until the 5 day tendering period to close. However, once you select a lawyer, tendering closes and you won't receive any additional tenders.

Am I able to obtain free legal advice from a Community Legal Centre?

Community Legal Centres are independent community organizations that provide free legal advice to the public. Those centres usually assist clients who face economic/social disadvantage. To find the CLC nearest to you, visit this website: www.naclc.org.au/directory/

Can I get free legal advice from law firms that provide pro-bono services?

Many law firms operate pro-bono schemes and provide free legal services to people who cannot otherwise get legal assistance. The Public Interest Law Clearing House (PILCH) helps individuals access pro-bono services across Victoria. PILCH may be able to help you find pro-bono legal assistance if your matter has a good chance of success, you are ineligible for legal aid and you meet a means test. If you think you may qualify, we recommend that you contact PILCH directly (www.pilch.org.au).

Are my case details covered by legal professional privilege?

We cannot give legal advice in that regard. Whether the details you provide are covered by legal professional privilege depends on the circumstances of the matter. To be prudent, we recommend that clients refrain from disclosing any confessions, admissions, states of mind or previous legal advice, in their case descriptions.

In our view, a client posting a case on the Select Law website is similar to a potential client shopping around and meeting with various lawyers to discuss their case, before they decide which one to engage. In that scenario, the client would make a different communication to each lawyer. In the Select Law scenario, the client makes only one communication (ie, their case details). Despite the fact that we may provide those details to many lawyers, the communication is the same each time.

Further, to protect your security, lawyers are required to conduct a conflict search before accessing your case details and have agreed with us to keep your information strictly confidential. They are also prohibited in our terms and conditions from acting for any future client, if doing so would require them to use your confidential information for the benefit of that future client. If you have further concerns about confidentiality or privilege issues, we recommend you seek legal advice first.
